MEET THE FARMER

This Ethiopian Natural processed coffee comes from the Biru Bekele wash station, located in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. With farms on elevations between 1800 and 2100 m ASL, this region is known for some of the best coffee in the world.

Biru started growing coffee in 2005 and has been exporting for over 15 years. He built a washing station in 2018 and decided to produce only natural processed coffee. He likes to focus on one thing at a time and make sure it is perfect.

MEET THE FARMER

This family-owned estate is extraordinarily socially conscious. They use fermented coffee cherries to create natural gas, which partially powers their operation. They also donate books and computers to the local schools, and in a more rural area, they built and funded a new school preventing small children from having to walk over 15 km each way to class. They also help Haitians obtain legal residence in the Dominican Republic, in order to receive fair wages. We pay roughly 300% higher wages to this Estate for their exceptional care of the environment, organic certification, care for local Haitian immigrants, and high cupping scores.

MEET THE FARMER

18 Rabbit (18 Conejos) is a collective of farms all owned by different members of the Zelaya Ontreras family. Dulce Marlen, the owner of Finca Dulce Luna, is the matriarch of the family, and the owner of 18 Rabbit exports. Her and her husband were pioneers of both organic and Biodynamic farming techniques, being intentional about naturally regenerating the soil they use for their agriculture. Members of the 18 Rabbit family have placed in the top 10 for Honduras’ Cup of Excellence, and work together to create unique fermentations and cupping experiences for their partners.

WHY CAFE KREYOL?

We believe farmers should get paid based on the quality of their product and we practice this belief by paying up to 300% higher wages than what Fair Trade requires.

This Direct Trade system, that is now the backbone of Cafe Kreyol, believes that quality and sustainability are parallel.

Our story continues as we work to alleviate poverty in rural coffee growing regions, one cup at a time.
