THE DETAILS

This coffee is a limited offering that we have hand picked from the top ten coffees at the Bolivia National Tournament.

6th Place Winner of the Cafe Presidencial Bolivia National Tournament (88.23 points)

This coffee earned 6th place in the Bolivia National Tournament, which is uses the same format, same cupping form, and many of the same judges, as the Cup of Excellence.

Cup of Excellence is a world renowned annual competition, organized by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence. The several hundred entries for each origin are judged by a team known as the “National Jury”, who proceeds to select the top 40 coffees, based on a scoring sheet that is unique to Cup of Excellence, but similar to the Specialty Coffee Association form. The scoring consists of evaluating attributes such as flavor, aftertaste, sweetness, clean cup, mouthfeel, acidity, uniformity, and balance, all measured separately, and totaling them up to obtain the coffees final score. These final 40 coffees are then judged by a combination of two lead judges from the National Jury, along with a dozen or so renowned members of the worldwide coffee community known as the “International Jury”. These jury members are long time coffee professionals who have experience in Quality Evaluation, cupping, and scoring (among a wealth of other coffee knowledge), and Cafe Kreyol was selected for the international jury during this 2023 Bolivia National Tournament. These jurors spend the next week cupping, blind scoring, and judging these coffees. All scores are finally averaged to bring us the Top 20 International Winners, and the remaining Top 20 national winners.

Keep in mind that all scoring systems are different (Cup of Excellence, Coffee Review, and Q Grading using the Specialty Coffee Association form), and judge coffees on separate scales. This is why you may see a 91 from Coffee Review, that might not be as good of a coffee as a 90 from Cup of Excellence. When the scale is harder, the score becomes more impressive.

This Black Honey processed Red Caturra is part of Cafe Kreyol’s Competition Series, and we brought it home to you for it’s exceptional balance, juicy bright acidity, and exceptional value. Grown by the Finca Calani in San Jose, Bolivia, this unique nanolot is extremely limited, with only 190 lbs produced for the entire year.

Enjoy a sweet and brilliant cup, balanced with a complementing mixture of bright lime and juicy raspberry acidity.

MEET THE FARMER

Juan Calani Vargas and his family migrated from Potosi in the Chayanta province to the San Jose community in 1988. They found better opportunities in agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of vegetables. Marcelina and her husband Juan are a family with five children and are all excellent coffee producers.

After winning the 2021 Presidential Cup Tournament, they opened a large market for their coffee. Professionals from all over the world, including Colombia, France, and Italy, came to learn about their work. In this way Juan and his family expanded their farms from 0.5 Ha to 2.0 Ha, with the help of Juan’s sons Dorian and Antonio.

Finca Calani would go on to place in many tournaments including, The First Departmental Tournament “The Best Kochalo Coffee”, the IPD-SA National Cochabamba Regional Coffee Program, and now the Bolivia National Tournament.

WHY CAFE KREYOL?

We believe farmers should get paid based on the quality of their product and we practice this belief by paying up to 300% higher wages than what Fair Trade requires.

This Direct Trade system, that is now the backbone of Cafe Kreyol, believes that quality and sustainability are parallel.

Our story continues as we work to alleviate poverty in rural coffee growing regions, one cup at a time.
